Alfonso Sangüesa /Chile-Suecia
Born in Santiago de Chile in 1957, where he lived until his youth, when he was forced to leave Chile due to the local political situation and took Mexico as his second home. He studied economics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and later left for Europe in search of a new path. In 1980, Sangüesa moved to Sweden, where he developed both his artistic and professional career. In 1982 he studied art and painting at the Grundis School in Stockholm, and it is from 1985 when he works intensively in his pictorial art, making a series of painting exhibitions, both individual and collective, in different galleries and museums in Sweden. The course of his artistic career took a significant turn when in 1985 he was asked to work at the Swedish National Theater “Dramaten”, creating scenic paintings and sets, as well as scenography itself. Among the most outstanding plays in which he participated are: “The Marquee of Sade”, by Yukio Mishima; ‘A Doll's House’, by Ibsen in 1989; ‘The Winter's Tale’ by Shakespeare in 1994, directed by Ingmar Bergman; ‘Syndafall’, in 1989 and ‘Varieté Bizarr’, in 1990, by director Staffan Westerberg; ‘Death of a Salesman’ by Arthur Miller, directed in 1992 by Miller himself; as well as ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, by Shakespeare, directed by John Caird in 2001. During 1989, he worked on the scenic painting of the Danish director Bille August's feature film “With Good Intentions”, based on Ingmar Bergman's manuscript. This work was carried out in the workshops of the Swedish national television, as well as in the workshops of the Swedish Film Institute. In 1992 in Portugal, he participated in the realization of the scenic painting of the feature film “The House of the Spirits” based on the book by Isabel Allende, directed by Danish director Bille August and starring Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Rider and Antonio Banderas. Between 1994 and 1995, he participated in the construction of the story house “Junibacken” in Stockholm, based on the world created by the writer Astrid Lindgren. Also in 1996, he works on the construction of sets based on the application of ancient painting techniques for the classical theater “Drottningholms slottsteater”. Between 2001 and 2003 he did the decoration and painting work for the permanent exhibition “Vikt av vatten” (The importance of water) at the culture house “Dunkers kulturhus” in the city of Helsingborg; and for the museum “Kulturen”, in the city of Lund, the exhibition “Ting för lek” (Things to play with).
